Motion Tracking Exercise

I used Autodesk MatchMover to make a maya file with camera tracking the motion in the video.
Then, I added a ball bouncing in the frame, slowly rolling... I also added the shadow to make it look more realistic!

DUE TO ITS LARGE SIZE, I HAD TO POST IT ON VIMEO.. HERE IS THE ADDRESS!

Animation - bouncing ball

I made the ball bounce three times and slide into a hole on the ground.
I tried to make the ball squeeze when it hit the ground by shrinking the lower part of the ball in the vertex mode, to make it look more natural.

Animation - flying disk!!

I made a flying disk, briefly through maya. I made the disk with surface - rotation then converted it into polygons
then I made a simple cityscape with buildings. The disk flies around, then lands on top of one of the buildings.

3D - animation render

I added two key frames and changed the particle time... to make the particles flow.
I batch rendered 20 frames of it, then made them into an animation with after effects.

3D Particle Exercise

I added a 3D container in Fluid Effects Tap, then put the space dust particles on my space scene.

3D Material Exercise

I used displacement mapping in order to make bumpy surface of the planet.
Also, I used special effects->glow and hide object to make the little halo effect on the planet.

Dong Kim 3D Modeling - Laughing Buddha

This is the final product.
I used geometric sculpt tool for the face and the legs.
Also, this tool was very useful in making the arms chubbier. Loved it!

Assignment 4 Progress Report

I am going to design a 3d model of the Laughing Monk, which is a famous iconic figure in Korea and other Asian nations.

I created his torso with face extrude methods, using sphere creating tool for his belly and lofting tool for his upper torso. creating his belly button and nipples was very fun.

Then I created his arm, using surface extrude tool. I used lattice tool in order to put the joints in the right place, as well as using face and vertex edit to create his hand.

By this point of production, I still needed to work on lots of details, such as his feet and his face.

2D Shape Assignment: Curves and Surfaces

I first created a logo using planar, its a simple logo with planes made up of lines, holes and texts.
Also, I created a UFO shape with the rotation tool and a curve, adding some metalic skin.
Then I created a twisted corn with the extrude tool, using a flower-shaped curve and a line perpendicular to it.
Finally, I drawed a circle, a triangle, a larger circle all parallel to one another and used lofting tool to create a vase.

Perspective Photoshop Project

For this project, I conceived an image of a street in 2 vanishing point perspective.
For the lighting, I focused on the reflecting color tone from the two cars, as well as the color of the blue sky.

Introducing Dong H Kim

I am a Student filmmaker from South Korea at University of Texas at Austin.

So far, I have been mostly focusing on producing documentaries, and directed two 10-minute-long pieces of docs on the voices of homeless people in Austin, Finding Joe and Voice in the Letter. Also, I produced two 4-minute-long docs.

I also kept my interest in creating animations, and learned to make 2D animations through Adobe Flash, and composed a 1-minute-long short 2D titled The Meat.
I am currently enrolled in the 3D animation and composition class and also taking real time cinematography class.

I've always thought that the potential of animation as a medium is so great, especially seeing those forms being used in many docs and narratives such as Waltz with Bashir, Scanner Darkley, and Chicago 10.

I admire the well-made game cinematics, especially those of Blizzard. They make the audience feel deeply connected to the world that does not exist in real life, as they see the realization of their avatars.

I want to fuse up the medium of animation into narrative films and docs. In this regard, one of my favourite moments in films of all times is the memory of Oren Ishii in Kill Bill Vol. 1, because the fusion was so explicitly made but at the same time, perfectly worked.
